Timber Garage Doors

Given that most Garage Door Workshop Ltd employees initially apprenticed as carpenters or joiners, it’s no surprise that the company has a natural empathy with the most traditional of garage door materials. Timber’s distinctive visual warmth and – over time -maturing depth of beauty means properly specified and built wooden garage doors-uniquely compared to simulated timber finishes- might actually look better after a few years’ service!

Engineered with rigid steel box section for outstanding strength or traditionally handcrafted using constructional timbers: precisely morticed and tenoned; wedged and glued. Our doors are substantially constructed and handsomely detailed. A bespoke design service allows customers free expression of personal good taste and the genuine possibility of a garage door with unique design elements and character!

With modern high-performance micro-porous finishes [available in ANY colour-you specify and the Workshop will do it!] and just a little care your investment should last a lifetime!

A Natural Resource that won’t cost the Earth.Wooden Garage Door

European Oak Hardwood and English Oak. Highly attractive grain structure and straw colouring, often with silvery broad ‘ray’ features. High Tannin content – effective long term against fungal/insect attack. Very dense and therefore, heavy but consequently, singular damage/indent resistance. Temperature/humidity sensitive– some shrinkage and moderate movement likely. Non-resinous– surface readily accepts stains /protective varnishes.

Western Red Cedar. Softwood. North America. Natural/bare [above] and stained Mid Oak [below]. Low density. Rated 6 on a scale of 1-6 relating to ease of working and indent resistance. Very uniform, parallel, open grain texture– dimensionally extremely stable. Negligible joint or board movement/warp. Wide natural colour variation from cream to black-although mostly shades of Amber, Cinnamon etc;- individual boards will be selected, as far as possible, to produce a harmonious aesthetic. Contains aromatic oils, Plicatic acid– strong natural fungicide/bacteriacide and insect repelling qualities. Toxic to the fungus that causes wet rot decay. Extremely durable. Non-resinous– surface readily accepts stains /protective varnishes.

Idigbo. West African Hardwood. Yellow-brown. Consistent, attractive visible graining, with silky figuring effect. Similar appearance to Oak when stained– popular, less expensive alternative. Moderate hardness and density. Good stability under temperature/humidity variation– minor dimensional change/joint movement. Very good moisture resistance but can stain yellow in contact with water. Good durability but resists absorption of preservative treatments-requires adequate surface protection.

Western Hemlock. North America. Softwood. Initial low indent resistance but markedly hardens with age. Virtually knot– free. Consistent bright/clear grain. Very attractive Light Honey to Golden Tan tones. Extremely wear resistant – machines to very accurate, sharp profiles and sands/stains to reflective silky smoothness. Very prestigious appearance. High dimensionally stability but requires adequate preservative pre-treatment to achieve durability in service.

Workshop Stains & Finishes

Modern life demands low or non-maintenance products – and our wooden garage doors are no exception! Factory or Workshop applied high performance finishes are designed to nourish and protect timbers, emphasising natural colouration ,tones and surface structure; further differentiating this natural product from simulated wooden finishes. Traditional paint and varnish fails-often prematurely by blistering and flaking- because they attempt to impose a hard , impermeable layer on a material which is still breathing and living. Our selected finishes — including solid opaque colours- are vapour permeable and elastic and therefore highly durable because they are much more in harmony with the material underneath.

Generally coatings are spray– applied using the Sikkens PowerFeed finishing system with three coats front and rear. Highly UV stable they provide greatly enhanced protection and durability with minimal maintenance.
